Description / Expertise

An Impressive late 19th Century Teak Campaign Chest, still retaining all the original brassware and screw-in feet. The chest constructed in two parts for ease of transport. The drawer linings are also in teak a sign of quality. Teak was used because it is an extremely hard durable wood and resistant to water and the ravages of termites. The top right hand drawer is fitted as a secretaire and veneered with “birds-eye” maple (Acer saccharinum). The secretaire drawer has a most unusual security lock which is stamped “E. Cotterill and Co Henry Fear manufacturer patent Acme Birmingham”. The lock still retains the original “signpost” key which is indistinctly stamped Cotterill and Co and patent Acme Birmingham. The shallow drawer in the base was possibly used for maps and charts.

E. Cotterill and Co were established in 1840 by Edwin Cotterill as manufactures of rim mortice, dead, chest, till, cupboard locks and safes. They were recorded as working at Climax Works, Ludgate Hill and later in Vittoria Street and in 1886, 93 Great Charles Street, Birmingham. His most famous lock was possibly the E. Cotterill Climax Detector Lock. It was derived from the Bramah lock, whose patent had by then expired.
