Charles Spencelayh (1865-1958)

Spencelayh was an English painter of realistic genre scenes and portraits. In his later years he focused on domestic interiors scenes depicting old men. Throughout his career he exhibited at the Paris Salon and throughout Britain, and showed over 30 paintings at the Royal Academy. Most notably, Spencelayh painted a miniature of George V for Queen Mary’s celebrated dolls’ house, which was on display at the Wembley Exhibition of 1924, and today is located at Windsor Castle. Works by Spencelayh are represented in several museums, including; Bradford City Art Gallery, the Tate Gallery in London, the Manchester City Art Gallery and the Harris Museum & Art Gallery in Preston.
