JEAN GABRIEL DOMERGUE
1889 – 1962 Signed & dated 1916
Oil on board oval spandrel 19 x 23 ½ inches

Jean-Gabriel Domergue was born on 4 March 1889 in Bordeaux, France and went on to become a painter specializing in portraits of elegant Parisian women. Domergue studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris where he was a pupil of an impressive array of prominent teachers. In 1927 he moved into Villa Fiesole in Cannes and which he bequeathed to the Town and it was also said that he owned good paintings. He was elected member of the Institute and from 1955 until 1962 he was the curator of the Musée Jacquemart-André, organizing exhibitions of the works of Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, Goya and others. His early works suggested a career as a landscape painter but soon became a painter of nudes and semi nudes. His work sold well and was popular with the periodicals of the time especially L’ Illustration. Domergue first exhibited at the age of 17 at the Salon des Artistes Francais in 1906 and received an honourable mention in 1908 and gold in 1920, having been designated hors concours. From the 1920s onward he concentrated on portraits and claimed to be "the inventor of the pin-up".
Domergue died in Paris 16 November 1962.
In 2002 the Musee de Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux held a retrospective of his work and in 2003 around 30 of his works from the English collection of Janet and Howard Thomas were given to Villa Domergue in Cannes.
