The sarcophagus form work box of wood, the exterior surfaces with parquetry of ivory and sadeli work, the chamfered lid with a raised central panel with ivory diamond shape and sadeli circular inlays, surrounded by sadeli borders, the sloping sides with shaped ivory panels inlaid with sadeli circles, edged with half round sadeli inlay, the hinged lid with a sandalwood lined interior and lined in purple velvet, lifting to reveal a sandalwood interior with eighteen compartments, three with ivory and sadeli lids with silver ring handles, two with lift-out ivory and sadeli trays, three with purple velvet pin cushions ( one removable with a sadeli border ), six with pierced ivory trays holding bobbins with sadeli tops, the entire sandalwood tray lifting out to reveal a purple velvet lined compartment beneath with sandalwood facings, a hinged stay-support to the right hand side, the angled sides all with hexagonal ivory panels inlaid with sadeli circles and with sadeli borders, edged in ebony and ivory, with a silver lock and key escutcheon, and raised on four silver paw feet.
There is a comparable sadeli and ivory work box in the Victoria and Albert Museum collections, ( V&A: IS 2344-1883 ), discussed in Dr. Amin Jaffer’s book, Furniture from British India and Ceylon, p.327.
