The curiously named 'lace box' or 'bible box' veneered in oyster cut hardwoods such as olive and Kingwood (not Laburnum as often purported) was popular amongst the middle and higher classes of society from C.1660-1700. The olive oyster box we have for offer is a lovely unusually small example (12"wide) of this form, circa 1680-90, with a fine holly stringing retaining well chosen oysters, surrounded by a further nine oysters, cross banded in olive and cross grain ovolo mouldings in figured olive. The box still retains its original red japanned interior and original well patinated surface. A lovely piece to add to or perhaps start a collection either way a lovely furnishing piece.
Superb and original condition, Lock and hinges possibly original, period William and Mary skeleton key.
