An Admiral Fitzroy's Storm Stick Barometer, signed Negretti & Zambra, Instrument Makers to Her Majesty, 1 Hatton Garden, EC 122, Regent St W & 59 Cornhill EC London, and numbered 1107.

The simple oak case has the customary arched top, concealed large-bore mercury tube and leather cistern, and a mercury thermometer mounted on the trunk.

The case exhibits the lacquered brass-headed screws, as you would expect.

The barometer scale has perfect porcelain plates, with vernier allowing reading in hundredths.

Many of these barometers are still on display today in simple glazed boxes or built into a wall in various coastal locations around Britain.
In excellent original condition.

Guaranteed for 3 years.
Admiral Fitzroy commissioned Negretti & Zambra to make these barometers to be placed around the coast of Britain early in his position with the Meteorological Office. He wanted ships and weather stations to gather statistics to better understand the weather. They were first known as sea coast barometers, or coastal barometers, but later became known as storm barometers.

The term Storm Barometer was only applied in 1865. That information, together with the Hatton Garden address on the plates, enables us to date this barometer quite accurately to 1867.
