This lovely footwarmer (stoof [stove] in Dutch), made from warmly patinated fruitwood, is of circular shape and is in the form of a charming small garden pavilion, standing on a moulded plinth. It has four pierced "window" openings around the sides, each with a recessed panel beneath, which alternate with panels of twining flowering plants. The top of the footwarmer, also pierced, has a moulded edge with punch decoration, surrounding an elaborate carved open interlace design, with a carved flower at the centre. Footwarmers of this type were mainly used by women, and held a pottery or metal vessel for holding hot coals, which was placed inside the footwarmer by taking out one of the side panels. Dutch 18th century.
