A well-patinated carving of a skull in boxwood. Modelled with gaping eye sockets and gaps between the teeth. Set on a sloping, stepped octagonal base. A ‘memento mori’ – an object designed to remind the viewer of their mortality and of the shortness and fragility of human life. ‘Memento mori’ became popular in the seventeenth Century, at a time when strong religious convictions led to the widespread belief that life on earth was merely a preparation for an afterlife.
