Exceptional Mahogany Irish Longcase Clock by Alex.Gordon, Dublin. Circa 1790.

This wonderfully elegant clock by Gordon of Dublin is housed in a figured flame mahogany case. Starting with the break arch design with swan necked pediment which is carefully decorated with carved rosettes and an acanthus leaf acroterion. The pediment is supported by fluted free-standing columns with Doric capitals.

As is appropriate for Irish clocks, all of the mounts and decorations are in hand-fashioned timber. The hood is supported by a cornice with dentil moulding and a long slender trunk which employs a three quarter crossbanded door over a raised panel. The trunk is flanked by quarter reeded columns and Doric capitals which are favoured in the George III period. The reeding is carried on through the base which is also crossbanded. The entire stands on bracket feet.

The choice of timber for this Gordon clock is exceptional and delights the eye with movement and colour.

The painted arch dial, declaring his signature in the arch is one of our earlier painted dials, as we are moving from the period of brass dials to painted dials. The corner spandrels have become a feast of delicate floral decoration. The colours blending wonderfully with the wood. The roman and arabic numerals still reflecting the proportion and style of the earlier brass dials. This characteristic is lost by 1800. The pierced minute and hour hands are original to the clock, which is a miracle of itself. Gordon's eight-day, weight-driven clockwork will strike hours on a bell, is of the very high standard you would expect of such a prominent Master clockmaking family.

Imagine having this wonderful piece of Irish history in your home, to hand on down to other generations.
