Ebonised English 18th century longcase clock. The maker is John Cowell, Royal Exchange, London. This maker is very well recorded (his address is also given as: Pope's Head Alley, Cornhill and this address is directly within the very limited area of the Royal Exchange. John Cowell is recorded as being a member of the Clockmakers Company. He became free of the Clockmakers Company in 1759 and a Liveryman of the Clockmakers Company from 1781 to 1799. His clocks and watches are in several collections including the Greenwich Museum in London. This clock and case are in good original condition and undoubtedly belong to each other. The very good 8 day movement strikes on two bells, both on the half hour and on the hour. There is a strike/silent mechanism so that you don't have to have the strike if you don't want it. The clock keeps excellent time. The case is ebonised and stands 2m 48cm high. It has slender elegant proportions, the brass and silvered dial contrasting very well with the ebonised case. The likely date of this clock is c.1775.
