A fine pair of George III neoclassical mahogany pedestal cupboards, the stepped quarter veneered tops above a fluted frieze with acanthus to the corners, the front and sides inlaid and banded with finely figured veneers, one cupboard containing two smaller cupboards and a sliding cellarette drawer all with their original silver plated handles, the other tin lined. This sophisticated pair of pedestals can be confidently attributed to the notable cabinetmaking firm of Gillows of Lancaster and London, and indeed the drawing for these pedestals still survive, as do the pair made for Workington Hall in 1788.
