Important refined oil painting on canvas from an important collection of antique paintings. It is a very recurring subject in religious painting, infant John the Baptist or more often called San Giovannino. The work is of high artistic quality. Note in the photos in detail the refinement in the execution. The proposed work follows the classic iconography with Saint John in the foreground depicted as a baby hedgehog, with a cross made of woods from which hangs the cartouche (ECCE AGNUS DEI), a camel skin ocapra on him and a little lamb.
The cross is a symbol of its role as a precursor that anticipates the death of Christ, it is very simple to indicate the poverty and humility of John. The cartouche shows the words that John had to pronounce when he saw Jesus at the Jordan (as narrated in the Gospels). The skin of a camel or goat is a detail also derived from the scriptures and the apocrypha in which it is narrated of the poverty of John in the desert and is said to be dressed precisely in these skins. the lamb is an obvious reference to the words of the cartouche as well as indicating the purity of the baptist. The painting had been conservatively restored by the previous owners, the frame is no longer original but of the nineteenth century as well as the frame. Perfect condition ready to be placed between your collection of antique works.
