A fine George III Style Mahogany Armchair with freshly covered back, seat and arms, preserving remnants of old upholstery underneath, though not original. A well shaped top rail to the upholstered back which is in part supported by upholstered arms which have carved blind fret decoration to their upright supports. The moulding around the seat just below the brass nailing has carved decoration similar to ‘egg & dart’. The front legs also have blind fret and open fret carving as the legs are ‘hollowed out’ from the back. The rear legs are of solid construction with again blind fret decoration. There is evidence to suggest that at one time the legs terminated on small castors, probably leather covered. The strengthening corner brackets to the underside of the seat frame are a later replacement. Some other restoration and images before restoration are available. The carving and general appearance suggest to me that this chair was made in the north of the country. The seat size is approximately 20” square (51cm). This chair has many aspects of being original, but there is doubt about certain elements of its construction. I believe that it is a little out of date and is mid 19th century or possibly 18th century with alterations!
