This beautiful dish belonged to the Great Great Grandfather of my client who was an officer in the British army serving in China and Indian between 1835 and 1859.
Please Note the size of this dish a large example measuring 40.5cm in diameter.
Painted with a traditional Chinese ‘Story on a dish’ The centre is slightly raised, advice as to this purpose appreciated
Spur marks are the bits of clay or depressions left where the piece sat on kiln when fired. Firing supports were used to support glazed wares in the kiln to prevent them from warping or sticking to whatever they would have sat on otherwise during the firing process. These marks are found on the underside base within the foot rims.
As a mean of authentication it is worth noting that antique kiln supports were made of clay and should therefore leave a visible trace of clay within the "spur mark" like a broken off tooth, modern supports used while copying antique glazes are often made of aluminum, and are only leave a clean and empty impression in the glaze.
Fire supports were common in China up until early Ming. On Chinese stoneware or 'porcelain', fire supports were virtually non-existing after the Yuan dynasty.
Three long leaf sprays to the underside rim. A fine piece with good provenance

Condition: Manufacturing blemishes, old chip to foot rim, faint hairline approx. 4cm, a good ring sound

Size: 40.5cm in diameter I have two dishes available but please note this listing is for ONE DISH only
