This beautiful specimen probably dates from the middle of the 19th century. Also known as Derbyshire Spar, the precious mineral is a form of fluorite with distictive bands of clear, purple-blue and yellow bands. Blue John is unique to the Blue John Cavern and Treak Cliff Cavern at Castleton in Derbyshire. During the 19th century, it was mined for its ornamental value, and mining continues today on a smaller scale. The material is notoriously difficult to work, in its raw form being very brittle. But through a long process involving impregnating it with resin enables it to be worked into beautiful ornaments like this example.
No obvious issues.
