A Rare Syrian Side Chair of the Very Finest Quality

The carcase in solid Sandalwood, and rising from gently tapered legs; the carved and pierced back having mashrebeyeh style panels using turned ivory and Sandalwood, with a lobed domed top, surmounted with a delicately carved ivory finial; the whole in the complex geometric abalone and bone micromosaic.

Syria, Circa 1850
Excellent
Sadeli work

The noted centre of this complex technique was Shiraz, in Persia, and travelled some time in the Eighteenth century to the Bombay Presidency. Somewhat similar to 'Tunbridge Ware', geometrically pre-shaped rods were arranged in a form: bound together, then sliced accurately and laid down on the carcase. Normally small items were produced, and much, much more rarely, tables and chairs.
