A lovely painting of a rocky coast and cove with a figure by this very popular 19th Century artist. Oil on panel, signed lower right, presented within a gilt gesso frame and attractive arched mount which compliments the scene nicely

Size including frame: L35cm H 17cm minor loss to gilt frame
Age related wear and small losses to the frame. A series of little black dots can be seen but in my opinion do not take the attention away from the overall charm
Joseph Horlor was a landscape painter. He was born in Bath and married Elizabeth Sandys around 1830. The couple had four children, two became artists; Emma painted animals and Alice painted figural scenes. In 1871 the family were living in Bristol. Horlor painted mainly in oils and specialised in local scenes of the area.

Between 1834 and 1866 Joseph Horlor exhibited thirteen paintings at the British Institution and eleven at Suffolk Street (later the RBA). Eight paintings are held in public collections, to include the Holburne Museum, Bath; Victoria Art Gallery, Bath; Bristol City Art Gallery; the National Trust; and Shipley Art Gallery, Gateshead.
