A lovely scene with plenty going on. I can count 11 figures including two small children, farmers and workers dressed in their smocks, milkmaid wearing clogs, small child with a pull along horse, four horses, one pulling a cart full of reed, lots of typical farmyard chickens, witches broomstick, peat shovel, copper milk bowl with separators and a large milk flagon. There is a traditional half timbered thatched cottage, held with wattle and daub, and other traditional barns and stables surrounding. Utterly charming and of a quality that would sit well with the famous names of the Norfolk and Suffolk schools. Unsigned, oil on canvas, in good condition, some faint craquelure and stretcher lines as is usually the case. Presented within a later gilt gesso frame, label verso for the Victoria gallery, 158 Hermon Hill, Southwood Ford, London.
