A small Japanese porcelain bowl, dating from the Meiji era (1868-1912). The bowl is boldly painted with a deep underglaze blue and overglaze enameling of red. The well of the bowl features a hand-painted landscape scene in a Chinese-style, while the surrounding cartouches are painted in a style that is reminiscent of English porcelains.
During the Meiji period, Japan moved from being a rather isolated culture to a modern society that drew inspiration from the West. During this time Chinese porcelain also continued to influence Japanese ceramics. In this dish, we can see both Western and Chinese influence.
