This beautiful plaque is the work of the celebrated enamellers of the French town of Limoges. Limoges had been the leading centre of enamel production during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and underwent something of a revival during the 19th Century, from which this piece dates. The plaque is finely painted to show three winged cherubs flying across the night sky in front of a silver-coloured moon, holding an owl attached to reins. The plaque is set within an ornately cast gilt bronze frame. Between the inner and outer frames there are dark blue enamel inlays, set against gilt bronze foliate scrolls. The outer frame is surmounted by laurel wreaths and bows. There is a hinged arm acting as a support to the reverse of the frame.
