YOUNG CHILDS OAK COT CIRCA 1880

GOOD COLOUR AND PATINA, OBVIOUSLY THE MAIN FEATURE OF THIS PIECE IS THE INLAID SWASTIKA AT THE END. NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH THE SYMBOL THE NAZI PARTY ADOPTED IN 1920, WHEN THEY TURNED THE SYMBOL 45 DEGREES TO THE RIGHT. THE USE OF THIS SYMBOL DATES BACK TO THE INDUS VALLEY CIVILIZATION (3300 - 1300) BCE. IT BECAME POPULAR WITHIN THE HINDU RELIGION AND WITH THE ADVENT OF WORLD TRAVEL IT BECAME POPULAR IN THE WEST IN THE 19TH CENTURY. IT STANDS FOR 'WELL BEING' AND A GOOD LUCK SYMBOL, HENCE WHY IT IS FOUND ON A NEW BORN COT/BED.
