Emma Brownlow – “Charwoman’s daughter Feeding the Chickens” – 1872

Emma Brownlow was a renowned Victorian female artist.

She was born in 1832, her father becoming the Secretary of the Foundling Hospital in St Pancras, London where he had grown up. She developed from a young age into an accomplished and well-travelled painter in oils, often depicting children as her subject matter.

A detailed description of her career is given in “Victorian Women Artists” by Pamela Gerrish Nunn (The Women’s Press, 1987), pages 158-174. A good condition softback volume of this book is included in the sale of the painting.

The book sets out the day Emma made sketches for this painting, 19th June 1863 (page 168). She was travelling through Brittany and recognised the sentimental possibilities of painting regional folk in traditional Gourin costume. The subject is a charwoman’s daughter feeding chickens.

A clever use of oil colour makes this a warm, rich and particularly attractive work. The condition is good.
