This delicately decorated antique beaker is made in the style of Anton Kothgasser (Austrian, 1769-1851), who was initially a painter at the Vienna Porcelain Factory and became celebrated for founding his own studio which specialised in making decorated glass beakers.

This beaker is of circular form, and features a round base of cut glass. The transparent, glass body of the beaker tapers outwards toward the top, and is decorated to the front with three playing cards - a Jack, Queen and King - in enamel. Wrapping around the beaker is a gilt inscription in French which reads 'Leur union est notre force' which translates as 'their union is our strength'. The beaker is further adorned with a gilt band to the rim, which features delicate foliate patterning.

A similar beaker to this one forms part of the permanent collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
