An early 19th century superb quality Cuban mahogany cheval dressing glass/table mirror.

This table mirror consists of a shaped top rail with scroll carving with anthemion decoration leading to turned and carved finials to each corner.

These lead to the two side supports each carved and turned with lotus leaf decoration, these follow down to a stylised arched animal leg base terminating with a paw foot, the base being supported by a turned and carved rail with a reeded design.

The mirror frame consists of fine quality cross-grain Cuban mahogany with the original mirror plate, the mirror plate is in very good condition for the age, only slight discolorations or foxing in the corners (for photographic purposes the mirror plate has been erased).

This table mirror is in the manner of the cabinet makers Peter Nicholson and his only child, Michael Angelo.

This is an exceptionally rare model, being a design book piece of furniture: Nicholson designs were on parr with designers such as Tatum and Hope & Smith.

Peter Nicholson was apprentice to a cabinet-maker, later becoming an architect and an expert mathematician. He wrote many books on carpentry, perspective and mathematics. His son, Michael Angelo trained as an architect and styled himself as a 'professor of architecture and perspective'. The pair were therefore well equipped to produce a design book for furniture makers.

An extremely similar example can be seen in the book 'The Practical Cabinet Maker' (1826) by P & MA Nicholson on Plate 46.

This mirror is in excellent condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.
