A LARGE JAPANESE IVORY BRUSH HOLDER
Late 19th /early 20th Century.
Height: 5.5/8”(14.5cms)
Width: 4” (10cms)
The ivory tusk carved with a continuous scene of a Goddess accompanied by playful and industrious rabbits, some carrying pestles and pounding the contents of a mortar on a background of cloud-scrolls.
Provenance: The collection of Suzanne Lucas MBE (1915-2008)
In Chinese folklore rabbits are portrayed as companions of the moon goddess Chang’e, constantly pounding the Elixir of Life for her. This myth derives from interpreting the pattern of dark patches on the moon as a rabbit standing on tiptoe on the left pounding a mortar.
