A 1780s 30-hour longcase clock of particularly fine quality, by William Winstanley of Wigan.

The slender case is oak with mahogany crossbanding round the doors and base panel which contrasts strongly against the paler oak. The trunk has quarter columns to flank the long door with shaped top, typical of the region. The hood has a freeze of verre eglomise, black glass backpainted with a gilt scroll design.

A very similar case is described in detail in Brian Loomes' Grandfather Clocks and their Cases, which he describes as "a neat example of a high-quality mid-century case from the north-west".

The 12-inch dial has a wide silvered chapter ring, the brass centre is matted with cross-hatching, and a deep crescent shaped dial aperture and recessed rosette for Winstanley's signature.

30-hour chain driven movement, striking on a bell.
To be overhauled and guaranteed for 3 years.
William Winstanley is listed as a watch and clock maker, 46 Standishgate; house, 30 Charles Street. We know he was fined in 1781 for practicing clockmaking at Standishgate when not being free there.
