Meiji period.
Circa 1900.

Depth: 3 ¾” (9.5cms)
Height: 3” (7.5cms)

The exterior roiro ground decorated with togidashi gold lacquer wisteria motifs, this design repeated on the internal tray. The interior of both the box and the tray and their bases decorated with gold nashiji. The centre front and back have gilt metal ring handles with flower head backplates to which the original tie cord and tassels are secured.

The condition of this decorative box is excellent. There is wear and fading on the cord ties and tassels consistent with age.


Chabako is a Temae (procedure of making tea) performed with a box containing all the necessary utensils to prepare tea.
