A LARGE JAPANESE IVORY BRUSH HOLDER
Edo Period.
18th Century.

Height: 4 5/8” (12cms)
Width: 4 ½” (11.5cms)

Decorated in gold hiramakie, takamakie and nashiji lacquer with a figure of a cockerel on a drum, chicken and chicks amidst rocks and grass beside a flowering hawthorn with gulls flying among clouds. Some cracking and age damage.


Provenance: The collection of Suzanne Lucas MBE (1915-2008)


Symbolism is of primary importance in Japanese art. A cockerel on a drum is an enduring symbol of peace and happiness.
