An exquisite and quite rare 6-piece Georgian silver and crystal cruet set with stand crafted by the Queen of the Georgian silversmiths, Hester Bateman. Her signature delicate decorative elements, represented here in the form of bright-cut engraving and pierced elements, draw attention to the precision and innate beauty of the set. Cradled within the stand are five original, silver-topped, cut crystal bottles.

The cruet’s history began in Biblical times when it is believed these small vessels were used for the ecclesiastical purposes of holding oil and wine. It was not until the 17th century that there is mention of salad “crue” holding oil and vinegar. In time, sets of cruets became more elaborate to accommodate peppers, salts and other spices, made from crystal and precious metals such as gold and silver.
