Robinsons of Ilkley were inventors of the adjustable Day Bed and this mahogany example bears their name, faintly stamped in black. It is a very versatile piece of furniture that can be used as a relaxing couch or laid flat to make a bed. With removable feet and a folding frame, it would not only provide comfort to the soldier but was also practical for travel. The three caned sections each have a ratchet to adjust them independently, allowing for a variety of positions. There is removable bar at the foot to stop cushions sliding off and two turned knobs at the back of the head to hold a pillow. A number of other companies such as Carter, Leveson and the A&N CSL saw the attraction of such a couch and produced their own, closely following the Robinson’s design. Circa 1870.
