Item Description / Dealer Expertise

Mahogany longcase clock with 8 day movement by James Scholfield of Barnsley. The brass dial with separate chapter ring and bold rococco spandrels, the dial centre engraved with scrollwork. Painted landscape scene to the arch depicting a bridge over a river with a town in the background The case is in mahogany throughout with 'fiddleback' veneers to the trunk door and with a fine solid panel of 'flame' figure on the base. The brass capitals and bases to the reeded columns are of particularly fine quality as are the cast brass rococco paterae on the swan neck pediment.
James Scholfield (Schofield) is listed in Vol II of Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World by Brian Loomes as having been born in 1738 and died in 1775. This clock was made toward the end of his rather short life.

We also have an oak 8 day, brass arched dial clock in stock. It is by Wm. Nicklin of Birmingham and dates from about 1770. See illustration here and our website www.pinnantiques.com for more details of this clock which has an interesting provenance.
