The fine case has blind fretwork to the hood below the swan neck pediment, over fluted freestanding columns. The long trunk door has beautiful flame mahogany veneers, edged in a decorative contrasting wood. The flame veneers are matched on the base.
The good quality 8 day movement has four knopped pillars, and is rack striking on a bell.
The 12" painted dial is signed for the maker, with subsidiary seconds and date dials.
A John Thomson was working in Nicholson Street, Edinburgh in 1794-1814.
