A fine 19th century statuary marble chimneypiece designed by SirRobert Smirke (1780-1867) for Newton Don House (Kelso) and commissioned by Sir Alexander Don in 1817.

This chimneypiece has a rectangular shelf above a mouldedpanelled frieze flanked either side by square blockings each carved with a stylised floral roundel above a guilloche moulding. The unstopped Doric fluted pilaster panels and outgrounds with delineated panels all running into solid statuary marble plinth block.s.

The style of this chimneypiece with its restrained decoration and geometric form reflects perfectly the austere Greek Revival style of Newton Don house and that most favoured by Smirke.
