A rare 19th century mother of pearl pheasant

In Japan the golden pheasant (chrysolophus pictus) is a divine messenger for Amaterasu, the great sun goddess.  Amaterasu is a focal point of the Shinto pantheon.  She is the ruler of the heavens, so her association with the pheasant made this creature an important symbal of power, abundance and promise. This almost life size model shows a level of skill in modelling that is associated with the masters of the Meiji period (1868-1912). To great fanfare many of these exceptional skills were displayed at the Japanese British Exhibition held in London in 1910.
