A 19th century pair of large scale famille verte porcelain vases, each decorated throughout with cartouches depicting landscapes upon a foliate ground and fishermen to the reverse side.

Fish as well as the activity of catching fish is yet another popular subject matter in Chinese art. Calming depictions of waters, animals and human beings not only relay an idyllic scenery, but also hold iconographic value: the Chinese character for fish is a homophone for affluence and abundance, which can be interpreted both spiritually and philosophically.
