Before the German invention of backing mirrors with a layer of silver, the dangerous, costly and delicate process of mirror making which involved the use of mercury prevailed. As such even the most elaborate of frames was often less expensive than the plate itself.
This mirror has a very pure and simple two-tone gilded frame. The wonderfully aged mirror plate provides a soft reflection as well as rich texture.
