A stunning and highly decorative Daybed in the Chinoiserie style, (Chinese taste), very similar to those found at the Royal Pavilion at Brighton. Chinoiserie furniture was very favored by the Prince Regent and subsequently by his friends. Its decorative, light appearance made it very popular for use in fashionable circles, particularly in bedrooms.A near identical daybed of similar reptilian form and almost certainly by the same maker is described in an inventory of the Pavilion,Farnborough,in 1820 as'An Antique or Grecian Couch with Crocodile legs and is illustrated in Ralph Edwards and Percy Macquoid, The Dictionary of English Furniture, rev.ed., 3vols., 1954, vol. 2, p.145, fig.25.
