A mid-19th Century upholstered low stool or ottoman, the upholstered frame of oval form and raised on six turned oak legs with the original castors, now upholstered in a kilim.

The Ottoman, as the name suggests, found its way to the West from the Ottoman Empire during the 18th century. In Turkish culture the Ottoman was made up of a central cushioned area of seating, designed for family gatherings. In more modern Western interpretations, however, it appears as a structured piece of furniture with soft upholstery. It is used not only to sit on, but also as a coffee table.

This example is of fantastic size and attractive shape. It is firm, yet comfortable and, true to its origins, stylishly upholstered in a muted Kilim fabric.
