William Hayes was one of the principal artists to popularise the technique of basso relievo which used a copper plate to emboss certain areas of a picture to give a three dimensional feel. In 1771 Hayes published ‘A Natural History of British Birds etc; with their Portraits accurately drawn and beautifully coloured from Nature’. In the 1780s he was employed by the Child family to paint the birds in the aviary at Osterley Park and published ‘Portraits of Rare and Curious Birds with their Descriptions. Accurately drawn and beautifully coloured from the species in the Menagerie of Child, the Banker at Osterley Park, nr. London’
