This is a very large fine 19th century oil on canvas depicting sheep grazing in open fields before ‘A Berkshire Homestead’ in springtime by the eminent Victorian landscape painter Alfred de Bréanski Snr. (1852-1928). The painting is signed by the artist and sold in a good quality 20th century Baroque swept frame.

As with all of the original antique oil paintings we sell it is offered in the very finest condition it can be for its age having just been cleaned and re-varnished.

A very successful British landscape painter, Alfred de Bréanski Senior became famous for his dramatic scenes of the Scottish Highlands and romantic views of the Thames and Home Counties, especially Berkshire. Between 1869 and 1915 Alfred de Bréanski exhibited 46 oils at the Royal Academy and a great many more at the Grosvenor Gallery and the Suffolk Street Gallery of the Royal Society of British Artists.

As seen in the large painting being sold here; De Bréanski’s landscapes are characterised by a golden glowing light, and frequently feature water with cattle or sheep on grassy banks and figures in the distance.
