Joshua Anderson Hague was a founder member of the Manchester School of Painters, a progressive group who formed having spent four months in Pont-Aven in France. The group were influenced by the international artists of the Pont-Aven School, particularly their leader Jules Bastien-Lapage. This oil on canvas of a Breton Girl is similar in style and subject to the works of Bastien-Lapage. In 1881 Joshua Anderson Hague also founded the Royal Cambrian Academy.
