A Carved Armorial Double-Headed Eagle
North Italian, Lombardy
First half 16th century
Carved wood, polychrome painted, iron mount on reverse
Dimensions: 105 cm. (41 in.) high; 67 cm. (26 ¼ in.) wide ; 4 cm. (1 ½ in.) deep

This carved armorial panel is modelled as a double-headed eagle below a coronet, probably symbolising the Holy Roman Empire under the Habsburg Dynasty. The Duchy of Milan and Lombardy were under the control of the Holy Roman Emperor, King Charles V of Spain (1500-1558), for much of the first half of the sixteenth century.

A radiocarbon dating test has been carried out on the present object by RCD RadioCarbon Dating (Oxfordshire, UK), the results of which are compatible with our dating to the first half of the sixteenth century.
