A Chinese Carved Rhinoceros Horn Wine Cup
Made from the base of a black African Rhinoceros horn
Qianlong 1736-95

Size: 4.5cm high, 7cm dia. – 1¾ ins high, 2¾ ins dia.
For more than 2000 years delicate carved Rhinoceros horn cups, bowls and goblets were highly valued by the Chinese for their magical properties. For the same two millennia the Chinese have customarily drunk wine from small round bowls and still do so today. They believe that drinking wine from a Rhinoceros horn cup will protect one’s health and bring longevity.
