Made for the Dutch or English market, Canton, the well figured fall-front supported on runners enclosing a fitted interior with a sliding well, drawers and pigeon holes, secret compartments, above an arrangement of three block-front drawers, brass hardware, on bracket feet.

Huanghuali (Dalbergia Odorifera) is a member of the rosewood genus and is indigenous to Southern China. It ranges from light yellow to purplish red in colour and was the principal cabinet wood for fine furniture in the Ming and early Qing dynasties, at which time supplies became almost exhausted.
Some restoration
A similar fall front rosewood bureau of near identical proportions, circa 1750, is illustrated by Carl L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, Antique Collectors Club, Suffolk, 1991, colour frontispiece, from the collection of Mr & Mrs Michael Treacy.
