The terrier-like dog modelled standing four-square, his head raised as if to bark or sniff the air, covered in a streaky calcified olive-green glaze.

A similar model may be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, cat. no. C.167-1914
This earthenware tomb figure depicts a dog and was made during the Eastern Han dynasty (first century) and was buried in a grave along with other models of animals, farm buildings and daily vessels according to Han funerary customs. The dogs purpose was to guard the tomb against evil spirits.
