Accompanied by a letter from Canton dated 9th November 1843 to William Couper referring to Lam Qua, transcribed as;

“My Dear Couper. Yours of the 6th is to hand this morning and duly noted…..I am sorry to hear what you say in regard to your picture of Houqua, which has doubtless been sold to someone else and not burnt. I think Lamqua has gone to Hong Kong to finish a portrait of Admiral Parker. I have sent for him, and if not here will see him when he comes back and deliver your message to him…”

According to Carl L Crossman in The Decorative Arts of the China Trade, pg. 100, whilst discussing other painters possibly working for Chinnery;

“Lam Qua will unquestionably remain the most important painter of the group and his studio will remain the source for the great quantity of paintings produced from the 1830’s to the 1850’s. The portraits by Lam Qua and those which are believed to have come from his studio are generally of high quality, very much in the English portraiture style, they are some of the most impressive paintings created for the Western market”
