Modelled standing, his snout raised sniffing the air, covered in a lead-green glaze, with touches of iridescence.
This earthenware tomb figure depicts a dog and was made during the Eastern Han dynasty (First century) and was buried in a grave along with other models of animals, farm buildings and daily vessels according to Han funerary customs. The dogs purpose was to guard the tomb against evil spirits. 
A similar model may be found in the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, cat. no. C.167-1914
