This naive picture tells a story about the hardship of working life in the 19th century, Its protagonist is a man wearing a green coat and a long face who has the backbreaking job of delivering sacks of coal by wheelbarrow. His labour taking place on a quayside where some ships are moored in a harbour beside a fortified stone castle. The empathy this painting creates is caused by his tatty dress, his heavy workload and his foreboding expression. Like so many pictures of this genre & period it is neither signed or dated
