This naive picture tells a story about the hardship of working life in the 19th century. Its protagonist is a man wearing a green coat and a long face who has the backbreaking job of delivering sacks of coal by wheelbarrow. His labour is taking place on a quayside where ships are moored in a harbour beside a fortified stone castle. The empathy this painting creates is caused by his tatty dress, his heavy workload and his foreboding expression. Like so many pictures of this genre and period it is neither signed or dated but nevertheless lacks not for endearing qualities.
