Coconuts , in their native lands were a never ending crop and as the commonest form of eating and drinking vessels little labour was usually expended on ornamenting them . However , as early imports to Europe , just like Ostrich eggs , they were great rarities and as valuable objects they were carved by skilled craftsmen and converted into silver mounted goblets and cups , or the bodies of jugs .
